WFMU radio provides vertigo inducing free form radio. If you're a sound junkie, WFMU is the purest shit there is.

I turned on Irene Trudel's show this past Monday to hear John Goodman, Ed Haber and Kenny Kosek memorializing some dude named

'Citizen Kafka'.

I vaguely remembered hearing that name on WBAI radio but had never heard the show - Citizen Kafka having left years ago. I had always assumed it was a political show about loss of individual rights.

I was wrong. So very wrong. Citizen Kafka aka Richard Shulberg of Bronx and Brooklyn New York was a zany, brilliant genius who I would have adored following. As I listened to Irene Trudell's radion show, falling out of my chair laughing, I recognized a kindred spirit.

On March 21st, 2 days after Citizens's 'change in vibrations/transmigration' as his friends put it,
NPR's All Things Considered recapped Citizen Kafka's life.
If you enjoy these audio and video clips of Cit's work and are curious about who he was, I recommend a listen. It is cheesy, like most of NPR's All Things Considered, but it gives more info on the man.

The religious holiday, Easter, which is also, inexplicably a secular celebration has the potential for being a unifying tool on Earth. This underscores the metaphysical/esoteric principle of Oneness. May we pause to explore this possibility?
Within our Universe, we live in a multidimensional mobiustrip, which is endlessly counted and recounted by our Earth in its spiral journey around our Sun.
We, inhabitants of the Earth enter and exit in fractal periods, guided by invariant concepts and laws, both collective and specific, either unconsciously or consciously, guided by mathematics, astronomy, linguistics, astrology, mythology, paradigms - through allegory – all in search of continuity and meaning. Bear with me through my philosophical ravings. I will eventually get to the historical observations that brought me to this point.
There is a constant blending, as individuals, families, groups, nations, ideals, and faiths travel this uncharted path. As individuals, and as groups, we are defined by birth, discovery, growth, and death. To make our lives meaningful, we band together, not always knowing that we all share that same cause.
We celebrate pause-points within each cycle – all leading to culmination and yet each providing commencement in the never-ending pathway of shared consciousness. Overlapping cycles keep us guessing about what comes next in linear sequence, the time/space framework of our manifested trips.
The fortunate who choose to serve as wayshowers (astrologers and other students of cycles), often themselves only slightly more aware of the cyclic interactions that we all share.

"The importance of the calendar for the groups was that it enabled them (early religions) to place themselves in relation to various important events of the past, moving ahead of them, and so predict what was coming along behind."

We all emerged from the same cradle, whether by intelligent design or evolution or a combination of both. It is no accident that Earth's three major religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam arose from the middle-Eastern section of the globe, all early procurers of science through religion. They all celebrate the cycle of life correlated with the Earth's orbit around the Sun, and the Moon's around the Earth - through metaphors: their stories of creation, the birth of the light; and death, resurrection and ascension, and the processes in between. They all hold in common esoteric studies that parallel each other, based on the old testament – "In the beginning, God created…" these are mirrored in ancient studies of Pagans, which are unabashedly based on the natural cycles of life.
Muhammad Migrated from Mecca to Medina 427 years ago, which marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar. Islamic days begin at sundown the day before the full day of their new year at Ramadan. Islamic years are, however based on a purely Lunar calendar, which creates a very changeable year compared to calendars based on the Earth's orbit. Muslims do recognize Jesus as one of the prophets of the Old Testament, which they revere along with the Qur'an.
The Jewish calendar has four dates for new years, each for a different segment of their culture. Since September 29, 2008 we are in the Jewish year 5769. Their day begins at sundown and with a partial Lunar calendar their main new year is Rosh Hashana, the beginning of their 7th month, the festival of the sacred moon and feast of the trumpets. The Hebrew religion recognizes the prophets of the Old Testament, their link with Christianity. Jewish Passover coincides with the Christian Easter season.
Fear comes from and creates separation. Disagreement arises in what we do with creation, and where it leads – control of a common language – and who's in control of unity. All throughout history these groups have been at constant odds each other and with secular groups, whose purpose it is to control nature (human and otherwise), all finding it difficult to keep separate from politics. Overlapping cycles make for strange bedfellows. Would that we uncover the unity within.
Over time, the mystical and the scientific, originally joined and then separate, are now spiraling forward towards reunification. As Thomas Kuhn tells us, paradigms shift when those in control die off.
Disambiguity, the process of resolving ambiguity was brought to bear in the case of the terms: BC (Before Christ) and AD (Anno Domini – In the Year of Our Lord), when part of the Christian calendar was changed to BCE (before the common era, or before the Christian era), and CE (common era) to remove calendric computations from segregation within Christianity, thus embracing a religiously neutral alternative. The labels refer to the time of Jesus of Nazareth, and the Gregorian calendric system, which lends the question: who controls the beginning? The shift from BC/AD to BCE/CE seems to have its roots in the universities in the 1960s and 1970s, and was formally implemented in the beginning of the 21st century when changes were made in text books.
The western European Christian culture instituted the use of BC and AD to denote the beginning of the Christian epoch. Their ongoing argument was mainly concerned with how to demark the beginning of the year and the rules for determining Easter.
Prior to A.D. (or C.E.) 325, Easter was celebrated on various days of the week, including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. That year, the Council of Nicaea, in Bithynia (present-day Iznik in Turkey) was convened by Emperor Constantine. This is thought to be the first ecumenical (meaning world-wide) council of the Christian Church, as it was called to create uniform Christian doctrine, which at that time reached the limits of the Roman Empire. During the Nicaean Council, the Easter Rule was instituted, which states that "Easter shall be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full Moon on, or after the Vernal Equinox.
Eventually, the Julian Calendar (used at the time) was untidy, and too long, causing the Vernal Equinox to drift backwards in the calendar year. This caused a considerable change in the holy days of Easter. Clearly, an adjustment was needed. A considerable length of time went on before that could be accomplished.
Aloysius Lilius (c. 1510 – 1576) is said to be the creator of the Gregorian Calendar, through his manuscript entitled Compendiuem novae rationis restituendi kalendarium (Compendium of the New Plan for the Restitution of the Calendar). His plan designated the beginning of the epoch defined by the life of Christ (the issuance of the year 1); the beginning of the year; the beginning of the week; the beginning of the day (midnight, sunrise, noon, or sundown); and the grouping and naming of the months, the days of the week, and special days (such as leap year). His system aligned religious and economic cycles with recurring astronomic phenomena. The crater Lilius on the Moon was named after him
The reform to the calendar occurred six years after his death, when Lilius' brother Antonio presented his manuscript to Pope Gregory XIII. The manuscript then proceeded to the Church's reform commission, and after some modification, on February 24, 1582, a Papal Bull ordered Christians to use the new calendar. The Easter Rule was maintained. Since the ecclesiastical "vernal equinox" is always on March 21, Easter has since been celebrated on a Sunday between the dates of March 22 and April 25. And so the date of Easter is, each year, always on a different date.
Even before the Christian rule for Easter, humans have celebrated the vernal equinox and the return of spring as a time of renewal, consonant with the meaning of Easter. Besides the reference of the word "resurrection" to Christian theology and "…Jesus rising from the dead after his death and burial", Webster's Deluxe Unabridged Dictionary also offers, "a coming back into notice, practice, use, etc.' restoration or revival…"
Symbology such as the Easter Basket dates back to pagan traditions and Oeastre, the Goddess of fertility, who was often depicted carrying a basket of eggs, symbolizing fecundity. In time, egg shaped candy has replaced eggs, and the holiday has become a commercial extravaganza for confectioners. The symbology of the rabbit denotes fertility, as rabbits reproduce in just 30 days.
The tradition of consuming the ham on Easter comes from the habit of eating the last of the cured meats that were prepared and stored during the winter from slaughtered domesticated animals that could not survive the winter. The vernal equinox: the equal length of days and nights marked the seasonal change, gave them reason to celebrate, which usually coincided with the end of their winter meat supplies.
As is quite often the case, the differences between Religious, spiritual, pagan and secular holidays seem blurred, and the principles underlying their meaning come through, as a possible symbol of the oneness of consciousness, and possibly a way to heal our differences. May this information bring you reasons to open your hearts to others during this season of hope.

I have been playing with the eyebrow/styling wax for a week. I am having a blast!

I have become increasingly dissatisfied with all the styling waxes out in the Universe.

I want to sculpt my very recalcitrant hair without feeling like I'm covered in sticky mess.

I want to be able to sleep one night with a styling wax and wake up able to mist my hair with one of my organic hydrosols, place my mohawk, and be done for the day.

I want to smell fabulous. Not like a melon, orange, or disgusting perfume.

So....
I made my own using primarily raw beeswax, a bit of Jasmine Sambac wax and, just because...A tiny droplet of Ambergris infused jojoba.

March has been an exciting time to be an esthetician/waxer.

I personally found out about the NJ proposed Brazilian Waxing Ban last year when I schlepped to New York for further certification in this genital hair removal technique.

The issue became more pressing this March when all the NJ News Media picked up the story. After the story became widespread, thousands of individual waxers, spa owners and clients protested against the Cosmetology board’s ban on this profitable service. Loosely organized groups spoke out and offered printable forms to send in to Trenton insisting this service remain legal.

In truth, Brazilians, chest or back waxing has never been approved despite widespread service on these body parts.

The ban was rescinded with, I imagine stronger guidelines and regulations to come.

I have been researching hair removal waxes in earnest since last year my search has led me to question a variety of personal issues.

As a long time waxer, my biggest complaint against the common wax brands has been my observation that the commonly used (read, lowest priced) are thin and runny and more prone to abrading or even lifting off the top dermal layer causing scabbing. As an independent company, I pride myself on purchasing only the highest quality of products for my services. Ultimately, I was led to a new class of waxes that are manufactured to create a ‘shrink wrap’ technology whereby the wax adheres tightly to the body or facial hair without sticking to the skin.

“Wonderful!” I thought. That is, until it occurred to me that this very technology that allowed a superior level of adherence and depilatorization might also be toxic to the environment. Not a happy thought. I contacted 4 suppliers to ask them about this question. One supplier sent me a catalog 2 weeks after promised. Another never bothered responding to me at all. One major waxing manufacturer/distributor’s customer service rep told me “I’m sure it’s not toxic.” When I asked her about studies or msds sheets, she was unwilling to supply me with any real data.

Today I both called and emailed Ceripil’s main US headquarters with my question regarding environmental toxicity and received both a call as well as several emails from two different customer service reps. Both women assured me that they would continue to pursue a satisfactory answer to my questions.

I reach out to skin care manufacturers constantly. It is the most fun part of my business. I love to learn about the chemistry of my materials as well as connect with people who I usually assume have the same excitement and passion for the Esthetics of skin and body care.

Most of the time unfortunately, I am dismayed to find abysmal customer service. I have learned to not take this personally and move quickly on. It still surprises me however.

With delight and excitement, I am copying the courteous and professional responses I have received from Cirepil.

“Dear Gail

Thank you very much for your use and interest in our Perron Rigot Cirepil

Shelter Tales #2- Katrina

I noticed two things as I entered the pound.

A gorgeous and deeply sad German Shepherd crying in run 6

And that Katrina’s cage was empty.

I briefly welcomed the Shepherd with a little kiss thru the wire netting and headed into the main office

“Who’s the Shepherd?” I ask John.

“GAIL! Sit down, let me get you up to date.” I cozy into a chair.

The German Shepherd is Dolly. John had been sent on a domestic abuse case where Dolly was canine collateral damage. She had been loved by her family until something went very awry. She is well fed, beautifully behaved and gorgeous. Her eyes burn with loss. She sits, wailing. A new inmate pristine in her cage. She has not soiled any area of her space. She needs to go out.

“I don’t know what the status of Dolly is going to be yet.” says John. “But we will find her a home”

I know he will do everything in his power to find one for her. However, I am always a pessimist to his optimism. But moving on I inquire:

“Where is Katrina girl?”

Katrina is an 8 year old hound like dog. Easily 100 pounds, she’s been torn from her only home in a foreclosure. John and Amy have tried to make her as comfy as possible: She lies on a fluffy, sparkling clean bed at all times and Amy gave her a little stuffed ducky that Katrina cuddles and carries with her in heart aching tenderness.

Every family or person who comes by looking for a pet is introduced to Katrina. She has lovely manners, tremendous gentleness and devotion. However, her size and age always conspire against her.

As I’m sitting down, John crows:

“Katrina got adopted!

A family came in and said they wanted to adopt a difficult to place dog. They said they had lots of love and wanted to share it with a dog that really needed it.

They didn’t care how old the dog was or what size. I introduced them to Katrina, they put her on a leash, walked her around a bit and said that they would be honored to take her into their family.”

Then he continued,
And you know what,Gail? It was so adorable... When all the paperwork was done, and they were walking her back to their car, she broke free and ran back to say good by to me! She sat down in front of me and wouldn’t leave until I kissed and hugged her good by”

We sat silently grinning back and forth.

I envisioned Katrina sitting in front of John with her saucer eyes glowing umber, silently thanking him before she left for her new life.

Today even I, the cynical misanthrope was silenced and soothed by a perfectly happy ending

Shelter Tails-Bosco

This is Bosco. The name alone is a dead giveaway that he hasn’t been loved or taken care of for a while. The name bears no resemblance to the dog I met today. It was given to him a month ago at another shelter who no longer could care for him.

Bosco needs a lot of care for a shelter dog. He has Demodectic Mange, a parasitic skin condition that requires daily pills (or subdermally). Since he is mostly Chow, he could stand a warm, soothing bath with a gentle rubdown and thorough brushing. Chows need regular brushings to keep their coats insulate-able.

This boy also needs neutering.

We don’t know much about Bosco. I approached him respectfully and he growled. Not surprising as I expect he has had no attention other than to hose down his cage inside and out and administer his pills. And while John gave him his dose today he used a noose to avoid being bitten.

I will be visiting Bosco as mush as my schedule allows and begin a process of human connection. Who knows how long that will take but unless a dog trusts me I can’t really speak to them. Hopefully, there will be some angel in my small network that can care for him more intimately.

Bosco is going to be a gorgeous dog if he gets a chance. The mange is temporary and his eyes are fabulous. Dark melted gold with great intelligence. Just the basic cleansing and once a week brushing will have his coat back to the leonine condition it obviously wants to be.

Much depends upon Bosco’s temperament. If he is kind, unaggressive and reliable, he has a small but definite chance at adoption. It will need to be a lover of long haired dogs. Someone who likes desecration; as Chow Chows are undemonstrative and subtlety is their mode of communication. It will need to be someone who understands that Chow Chows will do anything you want them to. But only if they love you. No love, nothing doing.

If Bosco proves to be aggressive, a biter, a snapper, inconsistent, a food guarder, not friendly to other dogs or even worse, children; he is going to have trouble. A miracle could happen and someone who loves and adores problem dogs could step in and take him. But that would require eyes that see potential instead of the problem standing before them.

I will do everything I can to save Bosco. The truth about stray dogs, however, remains grim.

I speak dog. It is not remarkable. What I do find remarkable are all the people in this world that don’t. Dogs are very talkative. They communicate every second with every part of their body.

It only takes a lot of observations and patience with a bit of discipline to be able to carry on a conversation with a dog. Once you have experienced a conversation with a dog, however, it is a heady and delightful experience.

Sirius is my Black Chow. He is the most inscrutable of all my dogs. The only way I can truly understand what he is saying to me is to stand and take him in. Usually we are standing because we are on a walk and he is insisting on explaining why a certain way is preferable and why. Sometimes we stand and attempt to break our language barrier for as much as 5 minutes. Sirius has learned to be patient with me. I have so many human projections that are loaded onto him that the process of stripping them away to see who he is and what he’s really telling me is one that takes time.

Speaking of human projections, Sirius is a victim of many of them. Because he is adorable, and looks like a little black bear, people always want to pet him. Usually when that happens, he is standing right next to the human (never in front, that would be considered ill mannered in canine etiquette. But quietly he stands, his head slightly inclined toward the human, tail wagging very softly and his eyes plainly saying:

“I like you. I think you smell nice but I do NOT wish to be touched.”

Inevitably, the human reaches to touch him and he jumps back quickly and with a certain amount of anxiety. It is at this point that I can tell how much dog the human is willing to speak or not. The person that speaks dog always states out loud something to the effect of:
“Oh, OK. I’ll leave you alone. No problems or hard feelings”

The person who does not speak dog will say how they have heard Chows aren't’ friendly or, even more disruptive, continue to force themselves upon him. It is owing to Sirius’ good manners that the human does not get threatened by Sirius. No growls, no bites, just an ever increasing backing up to me and a distinctive back turning. Unfortunately, Sirius' body language is rarely sufficient to get the message across: that Sirius (who is always on leash when humans are around) Is attempting to say: Peace Bro but no touch. I suppose it might be confusing to a non-speaking human that Sirius continues to approach and speak with his eyes but jumps back at an attempt at touch.

Interestingly, most kids understand Sirius’ quirk and a few have become petting friends as they were willing to spend the time just having quiet conversations with him sans petting.

I have no patience in life. It is only with a dogs that I can access an unlimited amount of it. I think this is because I find the canine heart and psyche fascinating. Sirius is a dog who has pledged his heart to me and I to him. Sirius is also a stubborn dog. Once he has felt the Spirit move him to something, he is pretty bent on doing it. However, he is always open to negotiation, providing I am able to speak his language. Plus, his desires are reasonable: A leafy glade preferably with a bushy overhang to empty his bowels, and a bit of time off leash where he can pretend he’s being all bad and running away from me. I learned from him, that if I just turn my back on him, he will trot happily behind me.

Sirius has silently assured me he will never roam far. He has also proven it time and again in the past 4 years we have been together. I remember the first time I unhooked his leash. It was an early and warm Spring dawn. I could feel him just wanting to kick up his heels and I wanted that for him more than anything. I knew I was taking something of a gamble as I told myself I trusted him, could feel our connection and just expected him to return to me. It was thrilling but no surprise when, after 30 minutes of happily sprinting from brush to lake, Sirius trotted back to me ready to be hooked back to his leash.

I think that in order to speak dog, you have to be a dog. I admit, my life is pretty much my dogs right now. Immersing myself in the canine mind has become my newest passion. The ability to speak another species’ language is by far, the most enthralling skill I have picked up in a long time. I’m hoping that the skills I learn in dog will enable me to speak other creatures’ languages.

I cut my own hair. It is relaxing, creative and just plain fun. I have thick, unmanageably curly hair that can frizz in the summer and be wavy in a really nerdy way in the winter. I have long come to terms with all the embarrassing ways my hair can arrange itself and just go with it.

I like to play with my thick, cowlicky hair and sculpt shapes in it with each season. I just finished my full blown Spring cut. I decided to Mohawk it. At my advanced years, this means I needed to have some sort of well designed shape in order to carry it off and not look even more comical than I need.

I solved this problem by cutting into my hair line and creating a sort of bat wing shape that defines the duck tail/Mohawk shape that I enhanced with dark dark brown which follows the Mohawk with density at the base of my skull and proceeds to become more of a highlighted effect at the crown.

I cut my sides as short as I could without making a buzzed effect. I then cut texture with merciless zeal.

I encourage everyone to cut some part of their hair. Even if it's just bangs. The empowering feeling is delicious.

By the way, the earrings I'm wearing on the top photo I purchased through Jeanne Adwani over at Intowit Designs on Ruby Lane. She is a talented artist in several medium also as well as a long time practicing astrologer.

Mercurial significance is playing with me.

Mercury rules gamesmanship (notice, I didn’t use the word sport) Glibness, wit, quickness, moving vehicles that don’t fly. It also rules phone networks and their answering systems..

I recently received a letter (Mercury) from my insurance company regarding an accident in which blame is going to be ascribed to me. (Having my second Saturn Return)

The letter was signed by someone whose name I did not recognize.
Since I already have a pleasant relationship with my present claims adjuster, I decided to just play Mercury’s phone game and trace down what this change in my status represents.

I began at square one: A central number. From there, I was invited to ski the slippery slope of numbers and choices required to contact the name on letter. However, being familiar with Mercury and Saturn, I possessed a Magical numerical talisman: The correct extension number.

After accurately activating the magic numbers, The portals of Allstate were opened to me and I was greeted by my new claims adjuster.

After exchanging pleasantries (I love hanging with women in customer service. For the most part, they are smart, compassionate and quite helpful) I got down to business and explained that I was merely calling because I had already been communicating with a claims adjuster and was curious as to why I had been transferred.

Evolvement Through Difficult Situations

"When one decides to participate in the linear the eternal perspective available offers comfort of the end result. Upon manifesting in the time-line the physical consciousness tends to disassociate with the larger viewpoint.

The condensed perspective is intense, often leading the individual into despair.

Difficult situations are sometimes necessary for the soul to evolve, and are created purposefully by the individual. We realize the unpopularity of such a creative moment when one is considering the probabilities, however, it is true that some lessons require a strong experience for evolution to occur.

The evolved perspective considers the experience and often in hindsight knows that even the most negative experience can produce a positive outcome.

I heard that we often incarnate with the same family but that doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

For example, my sister Cathy died a few years ago. At the time of her death she was being greeted by our long time deceased grandmother.

I had a dream before my sister died and in that dream my grandmother told me not to worry about Cathy because she would take care of her.

Does this mean that my grandmother was waiting all this time for her? Or, in any other case could it be that we just keep moving along into one body right after another?

Reincarnation is not a linear process. Most on the earth plane perceive it from that point of view, however. In the larger picture there is a multi-dimension aspect that is not being considered.

For example, one may incarnate in the American Revolution then move forward so to speak into the Middle Ages.... a difficult concept to comprehend while in the time-line.

No, your sister Cathy is still in contemplation with her guides. For her the measurement of time is now irrelevant while to you it's the basis of your current existence.

The linear choices of belief systems are attached to the linear life in hopes that by choosing them one will embark upon evolution.

However, it usually results in the belief systems interfering with the evolution of the soul.

Since there are multiple linear lives, the belief systems are ever evolving. The older the soul in experience the less influence the linear belief system has upon the life.

Ultimately the soul will become more involved in the process causing physical cognitive moments to be more discerning when choosing a belief system to become involved with.

In the beginning years of the 1970's I became a part of the North Chicago Musician scene. I was gigging a lot and meeting all different types and styles of musicians who were also working on the Near North side.

I became fascinated by the expanded potential of 12 tone music. As my studies in classical and jazz theory progressed, I desired to use my voice more instrumentally and wanted to be able to play around the groups of notes that defined a scale but were not limited to major and minor modes.

I was introduced to Fred Anderson and his fluid group of musicians. Fred took a liking to me and I was allowed to regularly sit in on gigs at the Amazing Grace coffeehouse. I was fortunate. This experience taught me about organization around intervals and playing with disparate tones. I also was able understand on a much deeper level, tonal colors.

The lessons of my year with Fred has remained with me today. Understanding the scales of perfume allows me to be fearless when I sense a major second in an evaporative bridge. It has taught me that a perfume sketch can include notes that are not always easy as long as there is a resolution that makes harmonious sense.

After evaluating and finding my compot somewhat muddy yet personally appealing, I decided to see how much top I could add on. I knew that my dilution was too thick but didn't want to think the composition out yet. I am going on a rough estimate of a total of 30 per cent.

I wanted to create a challenging top but not go into ugly. Something that happens often. Luckily I like ugly and just keep whatever mistakes I make in a special What was I thinking?cabinet

I chose a separate vial of a combination that includes but is not limited to:
a fresh distillation of Violet Leaf Absolute, Neroline, Citralast (creates a bit more longevity with a fresh feel) and an overly large amount of butter absolute.

COMPLETION OF THIS TOPIC
Butter is a fascinating but aggressive top. Had to blend it in better while retaining that totally outrageous first impression. So far have added an accord of softer ghee type effect with one tiny amount of Spearmint

Musk Tonquitine Luckily I've OD'ed so many times on this I didn't typically just pour an entire bottle into the mix. Using a dropper, I added about 10 drops. Also, while do love this particular musk, it is too sweet and adds a very gentle effect to the base and what I'm looking for is a more hide type of feel. So I continued with a wash of Tonalid for a musky feel without overtones. I also added a few drops of Vertine. I am not sure how this effected the accord as I am going purely by smell. A small bit of P Cresyl Acetate and Vernaldehyde which to me created a somewhat Buttery effect similar to Indian Sweeties.

I was helpfully kept on course when I decided to participate in mfd of perfumes swap. Lou, a member of the group was hosting, she's nice plus, no rules, which pretty much cinched the deal.

I decided to create a Leather accord at least and, if time allowed, build a perfume around it.

I decided to play down the smokier notes in favor of a Leather impression composed of my favorite musk bases, fresh and sour middles with some kind of top that is not generally used.

I am not teaching perfumery at the moment. However, here is a guide written by Lisa Camasi, the group moderator for botanical_perfumery (which you might want to check out) which is invaluable for the perfumer seeking guidance

Lisa Camasi is a long time botanical perfumer, artisan tincturist with several fascinating methods for hand-extracting natural essences. She is also a brilliant writer with a degree in linguistics from the University of California.. This has served to make her one of the most valuable communicators in the natural perfume world. She hosts two online perfume groups: botanical_perfumery@yahoogroups.com which is open to anyone and includes, I believe our own Dorothy Kingsbury among others. She also hosts another, invitation only, interactive perfume making group.

Anyway, to make a long story short, this is her piece on how to find the perfect perfume educator that matches one's needs.

There are more resources than ever for the average person to learn
about perfumery - natural/botanical and otherwise, and are VERY
reasonably priced - in fact most of them are free.

If you want to take a class, any class, do a little homework first and
make sure that the class you take will serve your needs, interests and
budget, and will deliver on its promises.

ASK A FEW QUESTIONS:
- What are the instructor's credentials, experience, and reputation,
professionally and otherwise? If s/he has formal credentials, are
they in a relevant field? Are they from a reputable institution? If
the instructor points to experience and a varied selection of "one
off" courses, one on one instruction/mentorship/apprenticeship with
another perfumer or perfumers, who are they, and what are their
credentials, what is their professional lineage? If the instructor is
self taught, how did s/he pursue their studies, and how did s/he
arrive at the conclusion that s/he had acquired sufficient knowledge
that s/he feels qualified to teach a professional course and charge a
professional fee? Is s/he published?

- Can references/recommendations be provided from former students?

- What books/literature is used to support the class, and what is the
additional recommended reading?

- What are the educational objectives of the course - what will you
have learned and be able to do after the class that you could not do
before the class? How will they be achieved? Is there a syllabus
from this or previous similar classes that you can view to evaluate
whether the course will meet your interests, skill level, and needs?

- Think about how you learn best. Some people do very well reading
from books, some prefer lots of graphics and pictures, and still
others absorb information best through auditory input and verbal
exchanges. Will this class be presented in a way that is suitably
accessible to you and your learning style? I have a good friend who
is a university lecturer in New Zealand, and one of the courses she
teaches is a distance course. It is at the graduate level, and
because the focus of the course is in support of the literature survey
the students need to conduct for their MA theses in Linguistics, it
works pretty well, but she said she can't imagine teaching any of her
other courses because so much critical learning happens in the face to
face exchange of weekly seminars and working collaboratively on
research and data.

- Consider all the available courses and resources in the context of
what you want, what you need, and what you can afford. Look for a
class that will teach you skills that allow you to continue learning
when the class is over, and leave you feeling empowered and encouraged
to do so - rather than enslaved to an expert who claims to hold the
key to the vault that safeguards the secrets of the ancient art.

DO A LITTLE RESEARCH:
- Polish your bloody google, yahoo, dogpile skills. Be willing to
dive down a few rabbit holes as you follow the links within links. I
have found some of the most useful and relevant information this way -
as well as some wonderful and wonderfully obscure materials.

- Don't rely entirely on the internet, and remember that it is still
largely unregulated and there is as much unreliable information as
there is factual and useful information.

- Check out a few books at the library, and if your local library
doesn't have what you want, ask if they can get it for you through
interlibrary loan. If you live near a university, especially a public
one, see if they provide library privileges to the local community -
most do! You will be able to gain access to books through the
university that are unlikely to be available any other way -
especially out of print books.

- Safety... Don't rely on IFRA exclusively for this information, it's
not reliable! Read the MSDS for your materials and take a little time
and familiarize yourself with Pub Med

sure others here could add many more but this is a start.

- Whatever you do, don't believe the assertion that making perfumes
using aroma chemicals is the same as using naturals and that you can
learn everything you need to know in a class that only covers
naturals!! There is a lot of overlap in general technique, but if you
are going to use aromachems, do yourself (and your pocket book) a
favor and, as is good practice with naturals, learn how to use them
effectively and safely. Aromachems can be very unstable and sensitive
to degradation due to light and temperature, they often require
solvents other than alcohol, there are compounds as well as individual
aroma chemicals and the dilutions at which you would use them varies
wildly.

CHECK OUT SOME OTHER GROUPS:
- Give your chemophobia a rest (and brace yourself for the equally
irrational and perverse chemophelia you will encounter) and bring an
open mind! While I do not personally use aroma chemicals or
synthetics, my time on these lists has definitely honed my skills and
technique, and has made me look at naturals with a renewed interest in
their active chemical components and infused my creative efforts with
much needed precision, analysis and discipline:

- Regardless of the group(s) you join, once there, spend some time
digging through the archives. This will give you an idea of the range
of topics that have been discussed, answer lots of questions before
you have formed them, and will make the questions you do ask once you
join the discussion more specific and useful Do this with any group
you join but especially one that has been around for a while or has
substantial archives - hell - join NP and mine those archives (if they
have not been deleted or selectively culled for the exclusive
reference of the owner.) The first couple years of posts on that
group are a wealth of information from some VERY talented and
accomplished perfumers (including industry professionals incognito)
who have long since moved on, weary of all the drama and politics that
can hijack the best of groups.

- Be willing to put in the time with your materials - books are
excellent references, and lectures can be tremendously informative,
but nothing, and I mean *NOTHING* takes the place of sitting down and
actively working with the materials: experimenting, formulating,
blending, evaluating, sharing, reformulating... the hours and days and
weeks you spend actively engaged in working with aromatics will be the
real education. Everything else - books, research, discussions,
groups, lectures - they are all optional.

- Work with your materials in dilution - it will save you unimaginable
amounts of money and will give you a better sense of how your perfume
is developing as you create it. I personally recommend using 5-10%
dilutions of most absolutes and 10-50% dilutions of eo's - it depends
on the odor intensity of the material you are working with. Create
your formula using these dilutions first, then add sufficient alcohol
to bring it to the appropriate strength (parfume, EDP, EDC, etc.)

- Invest in a scale sensitive to a hundredth of a gram, and learn to
use it - you will get infinitely more precise and reproducible results
if you do! Jen at lotioncrafter has a decent selection as well as a
useful comparison you can read to help you decide which one you want.

Ebay is also a great resource for equipment, from lab glass to
ultrasonic cleaners/baths to use in tincturing and as an aid in
finishing/melding dilutions and perfumes (in fact I do believe that's
where the instructor of an $800 on line course just recently purchased
hers!)

- Form a local study group, or find a couple local partners in crime.
Swap perfumes, offer each other feedback, collaborate on a perfume,
or a collection of scented balms, or put together a
tincturing/infusing workshop. It builds community and supports your
habit, and happens to be a lot of fun to boot.

- Try a variety of materials, from a variety of vendors and regions.
All lavenders/vetivers/lemons/roses are not created equal, nor are the
aromatics that are derived from them.

- Don't limit the development of your nose to the perfumer's organ!
Take a wine tasting course. Learn to cook outside your comfort zone -
take an Indian, Mediterranean, Asian cooking class. Plant a fragrant
garden. All of these will propel you along the path of training your
senses inform your work with aromatic materials.

Last, but most certainly not least - don't be afraid to think for
yourself. The more stridently anyone insists that *they* are the
expert and that *you* need the training or information they are
selling, the more you ought to slow down, look around, and consider
all your options first.

Despite the heat of August, oily, overactive skin is still vulnerable to the sun. It is especially important for those folks with oily skin and break outs to stick to an easily maintained cleansing regime twice a day.

If you also regularly use a product containing salicylic acid or benzyl peroxide, the months of July and August can see an increase in surface dryness with an underlying condition of over activity to balance out the parched skin surface.

Every skin care treatment I perform uses hydrosols. These precious liquid by-products of steam distillation are the gentlest, most affirmative botanical toners available to us. these liquids are the result of the water used create essential oils. The steam from the process is re-directed into a collection vessel and can be used to tone the skin.

I never dilute or adulterate my hydrosols. Depending upon the time of year, we can select from a variety of toning hydrosols.

I already mentioned in my newsletter that August relates to skin conditions that are vulnerable to heat.

The skincare service I designed for this period specifically addresses these concerns.

There is no way I could have designed a service to assist all of my clients without including honey. This miraculous substance has been used throughout history as a wound healing unguent.

Honey is the main ingredient in Ambrosia, a mythical sweet nectar drunk by the Gods and Goddesses of all civilizations. It was used to clean and disinfect wounds, preserve beauty, and even as recently as 2005, there was a study siting honey's superiority over drugs in the case of serious burns. Honey heals the skin, mends the pores and reduces the likelihood of post wound reactions.

Here is an excerpt from an article that lists naturally occurring hydrogen peroxide as a reaction to using honey on a wound

Honey is a traditional topical treatment for infected wounds. It can be effective on antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.

Honey is produced from many different floral sources and its antibacterial activity varies with origin and processing. Honey selected for clinical use should be evaluated on the basis of antibacterial activity levels determined by laboratory testing.

The antibacterial properties of honey include the release of low levels of hydrogen peroxide. Some honeys have an additional phytochemical antibacterial component.

Many authors support the use of honey in infected wounds and some suggest its prophylactic use on the wounds of patients susceptible to MRSA and other antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Learning Not To Do
I have recently acquired some 15th and 17th century singing bowls. A note was included with them that advised me to“Let the bowls be your teacher” The Bowls remain stationary and silent until my action sets their voices in motion. The bowls can be struck or rimmed. The resulting chimes and unique metallic drones contain a rich vibrational span of fundamental notes, sub and supra microtones that last for several minutes. The bowls are equally spellbinding to hear as well as play.

I find myself, as a beginner wanting to do too much. The arrow of stimulation excites me. I often thrust, or in this case, strike or rim a bit too aggressively. I notice when I give in to my desire to overplay the bowls that I miss the equally important act of receiving the tone. Music is an intimate dance of doing and non-doing. I have to remind myself to stop playing so much. To listen and take in the sounds. When I don’t stop to actively listen I can not evolve in the art of playing these sacred instruments. The economic, sensitive effort on my side results in a sweeter, fuller tone I am learning to cooperate with my bowls rather than attempting to control the experience.

Inspiration and it’s offspring, creation are dependent upon the relationship between tension and resolution, negative and positive energies. In the end, it once again all boils down to relishing and engaging with Yin and Yang.

As an artist who works in scent, and a lover of hidden rhythms I try to weave all the 'signs' that lay hidden in plain sight.
Every season brings with it a new perfume that expresses the individual aspects of that place and time.

Being aware of the cycles of the year is a valuable tool for composing perfumes. Taking the time to notice every tiny molecule of scent as well as color and texture leads to unique notes to add to my perfumes.

The present summer has found me in a seductive area saturated with natural aromas. I have particularly become aware of an abundance of coumarins filling the air in my woodland haven.

Coumarins are quite lovely and popular with many people. While the general term refers to a honeyed scent of clover, hay, and sweet grasses, within this classification are multiples of the subtle fragrant shadings.

For men seeking to undertake an Ethereal Journey during the summer, I often add Oakmoss, Tobacco and Liatris to the base of their perfume. The secure and stalwart qualities of these notes afford a delicious and masculine quality to any perfume.

Women who appreciate rich ornate summer perfumes are often drawn to summer coumarins: Liatris, Hay, Mellilot and Flouve provide a mature sensuality that easily can be shaded with delightful ingredients such as Orange Flower Absolute, Lavender Absolute and all the varieties of Rose and Jasmine.

When I create scents that use bases containing the rich coumarin family, I feel connected to the Royal Houses of Europe when snuff boxes, musk wigs and violet gloves were the standard fashions of the day.

I picked up a delightful CD in a Starbucks en route to performing hair miracles this past Saturday. Starbucks has become a convenient venue for talented performers' CD's.

Here's what I bought:
THE LITTLE WILLIES
Norah Jones is the featured singer in this group that includes Lee Alexander (bass), Jim Campilongo (electric guitar), Richard Julian (Also vocals as well as guitar), Dan Reiser (Drums).

Norah Jones had me sighing in total satisfaction as I listened to LOVE ME written by Leiber and Stoller and made immortal by Elvis Presley. In her rendition of the song, Norah Jones' musical entreaty is positively sinuous.

The King would be well pleased.

My favorite vocal by Ms Jones in this CD is It's Not You It's Me by Richard Julian and Ashley Monroe. This song's a melodic country/jazzy lament. Ms. Jones' delicious vocal purity is matched only by her subtle lyrical interpretation.
